One of the most important things I’ve learned in my twenty years as an entrepreneur is you should always trust your “gut”. The gut is the only body part that can’t be manipulated. The heart has strings that can be plucked and you end up being played. Your mind can end up confused and overloaded from the games people play. No matter if it’s hiring employees or dealing with customers, always trust your gut. I can usually tell if a customer is going to pay on time or at all just by my gut reaction. My gut usually knows within the first week if an employee is going to work out or not… Speaking of employees and gut feelings, if your gut tells you that an employee is stealing, doing drugs or whatever else, they probably are. I could tell many stories of where I should have listened to my gut, but the one that sticks out in my mind is this: I had an employee that started work for me and was an outstanding employee. Always on time, did anything that needed to be done, always the one to go above and beyond! After six months or so I got this gut feeling that he was working for me to get to my clients. Sure enough about two weeks later he informed me that he was going to work for one of my clients. This was a breach of our company policy and resulted in the loss of both a great customer and a good employee. This is just one of many examples I could give that as an entrepreneur you should always trust your gut!
