Why Face to Face Meetings Still Matter

It’s 2020, just 2 decades since computers became less of a specialized concept and became more of a mainstream form of communication. We carry them in our pockets, we send emails, text messages, and are more connected in ways than we are ever before. However, there seems to be something hollow in that connection. While parts of our world are purely digital, and it certainly makes sense to keep it that way in some ways, there are other aspects of our lives that shouldn’t be digitized. And I think that it something worth addressing. Or at least should be talked about more in family and social circles.

That is why I am going to cover a little bit about the benefits of meeting someone face to face. Lets look at the advantages of interpersonal communication over communicating through anonymous text.

People Understand Social Cues Better With a Face

Text, on its own is great for short bursts of message. There is little subtext or meaning behind “Going to pick up milk, Honey” . However, when you engage in writing for more than a paragraph at a time, it can get trickier. People parse their communication from a combination of things. According to an article by psychologist Kim Schneiderman, ” A study by UCLA professor Albert Mehrabian found that 58 percent of communication is through body language, 35 percent through vocal tone, pitch, and emphasis, and a mere 7 percent through the content of the message. “

A piece of text is missing a combination of body language, and vocals. You are already at a severe disadvantage with those things being taken out of the equation. That is a breeding ground of misunderstanding, confusion, and broken working relationships.

People Find Investment in Connections

Emotions are contagious. And that is mostly thanks to our human nature. Socializing is super important to human beings. It covers almost all levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, from a basic level to the point of self actualization. It also dictates how happy we feel. According to researchers Nicholas Christakis, professor at Harvard University, and James Folwer, associate professor at the University of California, San Diego, social networks have clusters of happy people and unhappy people within them that reach out to third degrees of separation.

That means if your friends, and their friends are not happy then you aren’t either. This is the same reason why if one person panics, everyone panics. We invest in the people that we regularly interact with on a regular basis. However, this isn’t something that comes natural. Much like walking and talking, it is a skill that you build over time through regular interaction. And when you live in a purely digital world, you can’t work on that skill.

And what happens when you can’t learn to tailor your emotions, or learn how to read and understand them? It will create bigger obstacles towards any sort of understanding.

In short, being with people face to face is important.
