The Purple Tie Radio Show Episode 66

Tonight on The Purple Tie Radio Show we talk about AMS 7.0 (here’s Robert’s wrap up video) and how it relates to business. Because it’s big business. We break down the pros and cons of using and owning a Chromebook. We’ve been using Chromebooks in our retail store almost since the day we opened. They’re lightweight, and they’ve got a battery that lasts all day (at least on the older models).

At some point you’ll run into a customer that wants something from you that you just can’t give them or don’t do. At that point, we suggest getting a referral network so you can have someone to send them to. That way you’re still helping them even if you can’t help them.

The Tech Tip and Tech News go hand in hand this evening. We talk about Night Shift on your iDevice and why you should wait for the 10th Anniversary iPhone instead of springing for the iPhone 7.

And last but not least, we tell you to stay away from your Social Media of choice for a single day. We can’t stay away of Facebook for a whole week, but we’ll give one day a shot.

The Purple Tie Radio Show Episode 65

Tonight on The Purple Tie Radio Show we discuss reviews again. But this time it’s a little different. That also leads into Story Time nicely, and why we ended up buying a vinyl cutter. Long story short, sign companies are terrible.

We talk about spamming your clients, and how it’s killing your business. Stop. Just stop. Nobody’s reading your newsletter you’re sending once a week or twice a week or whatever you’re doing. So, stop it. Stop it.

We also delve into the basics of what guerrilla marketing really is and explain a little about the preparation for doing a marketing campaign on the cheap using Guinness Beer as an example.

Our weekly challenge this week is ridiculously easy. Write something in cursive once a day for a week. And it can’t be your signature. Seriously? Just the signature? Lazy.

And in tech news we discussed Microsoft’s acquisition of the business-centric social media site LinkedIn, and how to remove those pesky built-in apps that come with your iOS devices.

The Purple Tie Radio Show Episode 64

Tonight on The Purple Tie Radio Show we talked about contracts versus a la carte. We went back and forth on it, but in the end, we agreed that contracts make more sense in the long run.

Since Robert wouldn’t tell me what the whole Business Tip was before we began the show, it started off as “It’s Complicated.” But it’s really not. Take time to reflect on what you have and really appreciate the fact that you’re privileged to be running your own business. This led nicely into the weekly challenge, which was: Meditate. Start off with 5 minutes a day. Just sit, in silence, and think. That’s it. It’s a little more complicated than that, but if you’ll take the time to watch some youtube videos or read a book or two on it, you’ll really start benefiting from meditation.

In Story Time this week we talked about bending the rules for certain customers, and we explained the perils of going to someones home. It can be very ? nasty. This also led nicely into the guerrilla marketing tip of the week. Ditch the office. You don’t need a physical place to do your business if you’re a freelancer or a single person business. Don’t waste a ton of money on an office if you don’t have to. Offer to meet your clients at their office or a coffee shop. You’ll save so much money if you just don’t get the office on the 3rd floor.

Tech news this week showcased how not prepared Apple is for an on-the-ground attack on their company when two men dressed like (they didn’t have Apple logos on their shirts, I don’t believe) Apple Geniuses walked into a store in Manhattan and stole $16,000 worth of iPhones. Nice job, Apple.

And Google made an Apple product better by making the Motion Stills app. It converts your Live Photos from your 6s or 6s Plus into GIFs or short movie clips and allows you to export and share them easily.

And last, but not least, we mentioned the terrible shooting in Orlando this weekend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of this tragedy.

4 Great Social Media Marketing Sites and How You Can Reach Your Audience!

Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Google+ allow those looking to get a lot of people engaged in social media marketing to do so by using photos, tweets, likes, pins and follows! Using timed posts and targeted ads, any brand can reach their audience in a meaningful way.

Facebook

8468995025_25e89894f5_oIt should come as no surprise that Facebook is currently the largest platform for social media marketing engaging 71% of internet users and continues to grow. Those who communicate via Facebook are interested in sharing connections – either to family and friends or to products with which they feel a relationship. The age demographic for this group is 24-50 and the audience is closely split between women (76%) and men (66%). Therefore, marketing to this audience is crucial to promote any business. Creating ads and a social media campaign using Facebook Ads will allow your business to tap into this market share and demographic. If you’re looking for a free way to promote your business on Facebook, schedule your posts so that they appear during the peak usage times: noon to 1 on Saturdays and Sundays; 3-4pm on Wednesdays and 1-4pm Thursdays and Fridays. To take advantage of these ad windows, write your marketing content on Monday and Tuesday then post, post, post throughout the week!

Twitter

Iphoto-1457433575995-8407028a9970f you want to target a younger demographic, use Twitter. Tweeting, hash tagging and pulling in 23% of online users, Twitter nabs the 18-29 year old demographic with a growing number of men and those 65 or older are becoming new users. Most tweets are posted between noon and 6pm and these tweets will contain images (55%) and links (31%).  Users are more engaged during the week than on weekends, so to reach this audience and garner a high click through rate (CTR), you will need to post during peak times or purchase an ad through Twitter Ads. Reaching this young audience may mean that you can get brand advocates who will not only promote, but stay with your product for a long time.

Instagram

Olia_Lialina_on_Instagram_logoAnother tactic for reaching younger prospects (especially women) is Instagram.  With an install base comprising 26% of all mobile devices and growing, Instagram is a great way to reach the 18-29 demographic. Best posting times for this platform are weekdays (except Fridays), between 6am and noon and around 5pm.  Previously, advertising on Instagram was only available for large businesses; however, even small businesses can now buy ads and reach young ‘grammers.

Google+

Logo_google+_2015One more area to create a marketing strategy is Google+ which has taken some hits in recent years, but having a presence on this platform is still the best way to rank well with the search engine. Google+ has moved Hangouts, Events, and My Business to subdomains but enhanced and promoted Communities (topic based discussion groups) and Collections (for images, similar to Pinterest). Google+ reaches a 60% male and 25% female audience and the principal age bracket is 25-34. If you are planning to utilize Google+ for Business to start ranking with this audience, you will need to create a local business page and have it connected with maps and display reviews.

Whatever strategy you pursue, you need to choose multiple ways to get your company’s brand shared out into the social world. You can extend your reach even further by combining social media marketing with targeted emails.  Look for a future post where we will discuss this in more detail.

The Purple Tie Radio Show Episode 63

Tonight on The Purple Tie Radio Show!

Muhammed Ali passed away the same day we recorded this. It’s a sad day. We all lost a great champion.

We jumped around a lot during this episode, but at some point, we reviewed the Wacom Bamboo Fineline2 Stylus. It’s got some great features at a decent price. There are a few drawbacks, especially when you’re talking about the required program to use it with your iPad, but overall, it’s a great addition to your arsenal.

We also talked about using crowd sourced competition sites to up your freelance work. We mentioned 99designs.com, logo tournament.com, designcrowd.com, and fiverr.com. Robert has some choice words to say about that last one, but we’ll move on, for everyone’s sake.

Holidays can throw a kink into your cash flow if you’re a small business. And when an employee decides to take an impromptu vacation because you have one day off the following week can be a big hurdle to cross as well. We talk about that during story time.

The weekly challenge is pretty straightforward. Change one habit you have for one week. Drink coffee? Change it to tea. Used to taking one specific route to work? Change it up, take a different route. Usually start your day off with a workout? Push it to the evening. It’ll help boost your creativity to change your daily routine for just a week.

During the tech news segment, we were all over the place. We talk about the Mentos and Diet Coke Guys (and how they’ve been doing it for 10 years now). We talk about Google creating an AI death switch. And we’re all over the place, in general.

The Purple Tie Radio Show Episode 62

SHOW NOTES Episode 62

It’s Memorial Day! Well, at least the day this airs originally. So, Happy Memorial Day! Tonight we start off talking about how amazing Pebble did with their build up and launch of their new Kickstarter campaign for the Pebble 2, the Pebble Time 2, and the Pebble Core. Then we sort of review mobile credit card payments. I say sort of because it was an abrupt transition, and we only really went into the surface of what the pros and cons are. We mostly discussed the fees associated with each service. But it’s a great conversation about them. Then we move on to how to turn a sour conversation around. I’ll post a link in the show notes on the website. It’s seven ways to turn the conversation around. And one of these will work. We also talk about why your business will eventually fail. Don’t worry, you’ll recover. Or you won’t. It really depends. Robert and myself discuss ways to reuse data that’s already available on the internet as a means of guerrilla marketing. And our weekly challenge is a breeze: Cook at home for one meal a day all week. NO TAKE OUT! And we didn’t get to discuss the tech news or tip this week. I’ll post links in the show notes. Basically, CNET is predicting that the iPhone 7 is just going to be more incremental improvements instead of a leap forward, like the original iPhone was. They’re also predicting that the iPhone 8 won’t be called the iPhone 8 since it will be the 10 year anniversary of the initial release of the iPhone. And lastly, I’ll tell you how to plug all those security holes in Windows 10. Well, they’re not really “security holes.” They’re more like “ways that Microsoft is cataloguing everything you do within the operating system.”

Enjoy!
